History of Koinania Cottage from the owners, Duane & Mary Wiltberger

The Cottage is the original place that started it all!!  We bought this house in 2000 since it was next door to our property. We wanted to be our own next-door neighbor!  It originally was a 2 bedroom, but Duane added a wall and converted a space into a small bedroom.  This is the room with the double/twin bunk in it. We intended to have it available for our children to move to when they grew up and got married but alas their lives and jobs brought them to other locations.  We also thought it would be a good place for our parents to live in their older years but that has not happened so we decided to bless Pastors and their families with a place they can come to get away from the duties of the church and become husbands and fathers to their family without the concerns of the church responsibilities even if only for a weekend or a week. We have seen too many Pastors burn out!  We had offered it free to Pastor families or charged just a love offering.  It has been wonderful to witness the rejuvenating effects of a stay at Koinania Cottage for so many families.

Over a year or 2 we noticed it was not being used as often as we would like so we opened it up to Homeschool families, as we ourselves homeschooled our children.  We saw what a great place this can be for science nature study and exploration.  I attended Homeschool conferences in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri and would have contests for families to win a free week.  It was a great way to get the word out about Koinania.

In 2005 we began to advertise over the internet to the general public and have enjoyed meeting many, many families who now include a trip to Koinania Cottage as one of their family traditions as they return year after year!

The Cottage sits on over 20 of our 110 acres and is across the pasture from our place.  Trees and fields and forests surround it with a small creek flowing next to it.  This creek has been the place for many happy days for children who stay here.  Oh, the adventures that have been played out in the imaginations of the children who have dared to really play as in old fashioned times without the use of electronics. They enjoy hours and hours of creative playtime.  We supply old pots and pans and baskets and nets for catching crayfish.   The playhouse transforms into whatever the children want it to be. For some it is a cabin in the wilderness, for others an army fort, or to some children it is just “home”.    The playhouse was originally an old shed or chicken house and we moved it and cut out a few more windows and decorated the outside with old metal parts and pieces we found around the place.

We provide a closet full of books and toys and dress-up clothes as well as many nature books for exploring and catching bugs and things to examine up close.

There is usually a cat or couple of kittens that we have for mousers.  They are friendly and we provide cat food for the guests to put out each day.  The kids really enjoy playing with the kittens and some families even bring one home with them.  There are also cattle in the fields and a horse just outside the windows.  People enjoy seeing the cattle up close and we get a chance to talk about where our beef comes from.  The horse is named Stretch and folks can feed her apples and carrots over the fence.  If we have feeding or farm chores happening at the time a family is here, we invite them to help or watch.  This makes for a truly complete Country experience!

We have decorated the cottage in lots of antiques and collectables but have displayed them up high so the whole place is pretty much child proof.
